Author: Gayatri Deka

Bharatanatyam, a classical dance form that weaves stories through intricate movements and expressive gestures, has found a dedicated practitioner and teacher in Kalashree Gayatri Deka. Her journey in the world of Bharatanatyam is a testament to passion, perseverance, and the transformative power of this ancient art form.

Early Years and Initiation into Bharatanatyam:

Kalashree Gayatri Deka’s journey into Bharatanatyam began in her formative years, guided by the rich cultural milieu of India. At the heart of her initiation was the revered Padma Bhushan awardee, Guru Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan, and Smt. Anuradha Venkataraman. Under their tutelage, Gayatri embarked on a journey that would shape her life and career.

The Rigorous Training and Formative Years:

Training in Bharatanatyam is not just a physical exercise; it is a holistic immersion into the cultural, spiritual, and artistic facets of the dance form. Gayatri’s early years were marked by rigorous training sessions, mastering the fundamentals of Bharatanatyam, from the precise footwork to the emotive abhinaya (expression).

A Doordarshan Graded Artist and Academic Achievements:

Gayatri’s dedication to her craft was duly recognised when she earned the distinction of becoming a Doordarshan graded artiste. Her commitment extended beyond the dance floor as she pursued academic excellence, earning double graduate degrees-one in Botany (Hons.) from Delhi University and another in Performing Art from Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, Khairagarh.

Contributions as a Faculty:

Having imbibed the essence of Bharatanatyam from her gurus, Gayatri took on the role of a faculty member at Ganesa Natyalaya from 2011 to 2022. This phase of her career allowed her to not only refine her own skills but also impart the knowledge she had acquired to aspiring dancers, nurturing the next generation of Bharatanatyam enthusiasts.

Versatility in Performance and Roles:

Gayatri’s journey in Bharatanatyam extends beyond teaching. As a performer, she has graced the stage in various capacities – solos, duets, and group performances. Her repertoire spans over 100 performances, both nationally and internationally, showcasing the versatility and depth of her artistry.

Global Footprint and Prestigious Performances:

Gayatri’s dance has transcended geographical boundaries. She has performed in cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Chennai, Tirupati, Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata, and on international stages in places like Dar es Salaam, Budapest, and Mombasa. Notable performances include the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Indo-American Friendship Meet in 2016, and the World Cultural Festival by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar in 2016.

Awards and Recognition:

The excellence in Gayatri’s dance journey has been acknowledged with prestigious awards, including the Kameshwari Nritya Samman 2018 (Kolkata), Nritya Kanaka Mani Samman 2018 (Kolkata), and Nritya Suvarna Kamal Samman 2019 (New Delhi). These accolades are a reflection of her dedication and impact on the world of Bharatanatyam.

Frequently Asked Questions about Gayatri Deka’s Journey

1. How did training under esteemed gurus like the late Dr. Saroja Vaidyanathan shape your personal style of Bharatanatyam?

Training under my revered gurus was a blessing that shaped my entire artistic soul. From them, I inherited a deep adherence to the grace, precision, and profound abhinaya (expression) that are the hallmarks of the Tanjavur style. They taught me that Bharatanatyam is not just about flawless technique, but about embodying the story and connecting with a deep sense of devotion. This philosophy is the foundation of both my performance and my teaching.

2. You’ve performed at many prestigious events. Which performance has been the most memorable for you and why?

While every stage is sacred, performing at the opening ceremony of the 19th Commonwealth Games in Delhi was a profoundly memorable experience. To represent Bharatanatyam and our rich cultural heritage in front of a global audience of such magnitude was both humbling and exhilarating. It reinforced my belief in the power of this art form to build bridges and communicate across all cultural barriers.

3. What does being a “Doordarshan graded artiste” signify?

Being graded by Doordarshan, India’s national public broadcaster, is a significant milestone for a classical artist. It is a mark of quality and professionalism that is awarded after a rigorous audition process by a panel of experts. This recognition acknowledges an artist’s technical proficiency and artistic merit, allowing them to perform on the broadcaster’s prestigious national platforms.

4. Your academic background includes Botany. Has your study of science influenced your approach to dance in any way?

It is a wonderful question! While they seem like different worlds, my training in science taught me the importance of discipline, observation, and understanding intricate systems. I see a similar beauty in the precise, almost mathematical, structure of Bharatanatyam’s rhythms and the organic way a choreographic piece grows and blossoms. Both fields require a deep appreciation for the patterns and beauty of the natural and artistic worlds.

5. After a long career as a performer and faculty member, what inspired you to found your own school, Natyam: School of Dance?

Founding my own school was a dream born from a desire to create a specific kind of learning environment-a sanctuary where the sacred Guru-Shishya tradition could thrive in a modern context. After years of teaching, I wanted to build a cultural hub where I could personally mentor each student, ensuring the legacy of my own gurus was passed down with the utmost care, authenticity, and a spirit of joyful innovation.

6. What specific style or bani of Bharatanatyam is taught at your school?

We are deeply rooted in the Tanjavur bani (style) of Bharatanatyam, which is one of the oldest and most revered traditions. This style is known for its elegance, grace, and a very strong emphasis on abhinaya, or expressive storytelling. While we honour this pure tradition, we also encourage students to find their own unique artistic voice within its beautiful framework.

7. How does your extensive experience as an international performer benefit your students?

My performance career brings a crucial layer of practical experience to my teaching. I can guide my students not just in dance technique, but also in the nuances of stagecraft, audience engagement, and the resilience required to be a professional artist. I share my experiences from global stages to help them understand how to connect with diverse audiences and carry themselves with confidence and grace.

8. What is the core philosophy you try to instil in every student at Natyam: School of Dance?

My core philosophy is that Bharatanatyam is a holistic journey. I want my students to understand that they are not just learning steps, but a language. I instil in them a sense of discipline, a deep respect for the art’s cultural heritage, and the confidence to explore their own creativity. It is about nurturing thoughtful, well-rounded artists, not just technicians.

9. How do you balance the demanding roles of being a performer and a full-time guru?

It requires immense discipline and time management, but I find that the two roles beautifully complement each other. Performing on stage enriches my teaching with fresh energy and insights. In turn, teaching and breaking down the intricacies of the art for my students deepens my own understanding and practice as a performer. They are two sides of the same coin, fuelled by a singular passion for Bharatanatyam.

10. What is one piece of advice you would give to a young, aspiring dancer reading about your journey?

My most important piece of advice is to be patient with yourself and to revere the process. Mastery in a classical art form is a marathon, not a sprint. Surrender yourself to your guru’s guidance, practise with unwavering dedication, and, above all, never lose the joy and love for the art that made you want to dance in the first place.
