Yes! There’s no upper age limit to learn Bharatanatyam. Students in their 40s, 50s, and even 60s pursue training at Natyam: School of Dance. As long as you are committed, disciplined, and physically healthy, age is no barrier.
Bharatanatyam is a disciplined and intricate classical dance form - and while its grace may seem effortless on stage, mastering it requires years of consistent practice, physical endurance, and mental focus.
At its core, Bharatanatyam is not just a dance but a language of storytelling through mudras (hand gestures), abhinaya (expressions), and rhythm (taalam). The Araimandi posture, demanding footwork, and emotive storytelling can be physically and emotionally intense - especially for beginners.
However, the learning journey is structured:
At Natyam: School of Dance, Kalashree Gayatri Deka guides students - whether children or adults - step-by-step using the Tanjavur Bani methodology, ensuring that each student learns without fear, and builds mastery over time.
So, is it hard?
Yes - but it is a deeply rewarding journey for those who are passionate and committed.
